2. How do Dukhas keep themselves warm in their yurts?
3. What is the most important activity in an Inuit’s life?
B. The Dukha
The Dukha is a small community of reindeer herders living in the northern part of Mongolia. The reindeer are accepted and treated like family members in the community. This is because all the chores and activities are centred on caring and feeding of them. Women do the milking, make yoghurt and cheese while men do the other tasks about the animals. Reindeer provide transportation for people since the area is hilly. Reindeer skins are used for making coats, bags and boots. These boots are famous for their quality of vvorkmanship and high price. Also, reindeer antlers are the ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. They have been supplied to China since 1975.
The Dukha live in yurts made of barks. On the right side of the yurts, the Dukha are used to keeping their hunting equipment. They don’t have beds. Instead, they are used to sleeping on the skins of animals. A stove sits in the middle of the yurts. They are used to wearing warm boots and overcoats.
C. The Inuits
Their lives are influenced by the harsh climate and stark landscapes of the Arctic tundra. It’s impossible for an Inuit to grow vegetables so they hunt and fish. In winter, they live in round houses made from blocks of snow called igloos. When snow melts, they start living in tent-like huts made of animal skins.
To travel from one place to another, they use sleds which are pulled over by huskies and large open boats made of wood and animal skins. Huskies play an integral role in the routine life of these people. Inuits make clothes from skins sewn together using needles made from animal bones and threads made from sinew. Art is ofgreat value for the Inuits. Small sculptures of animals and humans, usually depicting everyday activities, are carved from ivory and bone. Their love of art can also be seen in their customs. Following the birth of an infant, they place a carved tiny ivory into the baby’s mouth hoping the child to be good at hunting.
