SORULAR

A. Read a diary entry of an Australian’s tour to Gallipoli. Answer the questions.
1. What did she want to see there most?
2. What can you give as an example of brotherhood in the text?
3. What was Atatürk’s order to the 57th brigade?
Atatürk, 1934
“Those heroes that shed theirblood and lost theirlives;
You are nowlying in the soil ofa friendlycountry. Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where theylie side byside here in this countryofours.
You, the mothers,
who sent theirsons from farawaycountries, wipe awayyourtears; yoursons are nowlying in ourbosom and are in peace.
Afterhaving lost theirlives on this land theyhave become oursons as well.”
B. What characteristic of Atatürk does this speech reflect?
“Yesterday I did a tour to Gallipoli. I found it quite emotional because of the ages written on the gravestones. Ali of the tombstones were erected about twenty years later. And there are a lot of stones that say ‘Believed to be buried here’, which is pretty sad also. We went to the Turkish cemetery for the 57th brigade, and that was pretty sad, too. That entire division was wiped out on the very first day, after being told that they were not being ordered to fight, but to die, since it gave time to other Turkish soldiers and their officers to join their friends. Today, apparently the Turkish army no longer has a 57th brigade out of respect for this event.
The guide told us how the soldiers of both sides would swap food across the trenches on the front lines which were only eight meters apart. He also told us how a Turkish soldier had raised a truce flag in order to rescue a wounded Australian lieutenant and carry him to the Australian trenches to be Treated. [This Australian soldier, Lord Casey, laterbecoming ourGovernor-Generai] The thing I wanted to see most at Gallipoli was actually the monument on which a part of Atatürk’s speech is written. I would like to think that, had the situation been reversed, someone in Australia could have said something so beautiful.”
