A BEAUTIFUL MIND

Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. When he was eight, his family moved to St Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At eleven, Stephen went to St Alban’s School, and then he went on to Oxford University, his father’s old college. (1)___ he preferred to do mathematics. Mathematics was not available at Oxford University, so he did physics instead. After three years, he received a first-class honours degree in physics. Then, in 1962, Stephen came to Cambridge University as a PhD student to research cosmology, the study of the universe as a whole. In early 1963, just before his 21st birthday, Hawking developed motor neuron disease called ALS. Although doctors said that he could not live more than two years, he completed his doctorate. (2)____and began using a wheelchair. In 1979, he became the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, the most famous academic chair in the world. In 1985, Stephen developed a terrible infection. He had an emergency operation, but, unfortunately, he was unable to talk. (3)___ He controlled the computer just by moving a muscle in his cheek. Hawking was also a popular writer. His first book, A Brief History of Time was first published in 1988 and became an international bestseller. He also wrote a children’s book. He simply explained his theories to children. Hawking made several television appearances. (4)— He had the opportunity to see the movie, The Theory of Everything before its world premiere. He liked it very much. He died on March 14, 2018, in Cambridge when he was 76. He had an amazing mind and incredible determination. He never let his illness stand in his way. He really made many important contributions to the world of science, and he was regarded as one of the most brilliant physicists in history.
