Two years ago, COVID-19 did not yet exist, and a doctor called Uğur Şahin, who is Turkish, took the stage at a conference in Berlin. He made a bold prediction saying that his company might be able to develop a vaccine in the event of a global pandemic. On Monday, it was announced that a vaccine for the coronavirus was developed by Dr Uğur Şahin and his wife, Dr Özlem Türeci. “This vaccine is more than 90 percent effective in preventing the disease that has killed more than 1.2 million people worldwide,” Dr Şahin said in an interview on Tuesday. Dr Şahin, 55, was born in İskenderun, Turkey. When he was 4, his family moved to Cologne, Germany where his parents worked at a Ford factory. His only ambition was to be a doctor, and he became a physician at the University of Cologne. In 1993, he earned a doctorate from the university for his work on immunotherapy in tumor cells. Early in his career, he met Dr Türeci, the daughter of a Turkish physician who immigrated from İstanbul. On the day they were married in 2002, Dr Şahin and Dr Türeci returned to the lab right after the ceremony. The pair’s main concern was to research and to teach. In 2001, Dr Şahin and Dr Türeci founded a company which developed drugs to treat cancer. They founded their second company which has currently 1800 employees in 2008. “They care only about science. Discussing business is not their cup of tea,” said Sean Marett, chief commercial officer of the company. Even before the pandemic, the company raised hundreds of millions of dollars with offices in Berlin, other German cities and Cambridge. The two successful scientists live with their teenage daughter in a modest apartment near their office. They do not even own a car. They ride bicycles to work.
