FROM BULLY TO A ROLE-MODEL
Life doesn’t always give you what you want. But, there is always room for change. My name is Maleek Swaba and I was born and raised in Bronx, a poor neighborhood with a high rate of crime. My mother used to work at a factory for 12 hours a day and my dad had a small barber shop. We never had a lot of money. In fact, we were really poor, but we were used to that. My parents never cared about me because they were tired all the time. As a result, when I started high school, I began to act differently. I used to be very peaceful and friendly. But at high school, I wanted to prove myself to big boys, so I became a bully. I used to hurt smaller kids and steal their lunch money. I was terrible. When I look back at how I behaved then, I feel so much shame!
Then, a new teacher started to work at our school. She trusted me and gave me so many responsibilities. One day, she told me to stay after class to talk to me. She told me: “I believe in you, Maleek. You have so much potential. Don’t waste it on being a bully and hurting other people. You can be so much more than that.” I was speechless. It was the first time someone really trusted me and cared about me.
After that, everything changed. I stopped bullying smaller kids and started helping them out. I also discovered books, thanks to my teacher. Before her, I didn’t use to read anything. But, once I started reading, a new world opened up right in front of my eyes. Consequently, I found myself at university.
Now, I work as a Math teacher at a school in my neighborhood. I am used to living here and I want to help children like me.
