Man-Made Beauty
Did you know that only two per cent of women and ten per cent of men around the world find themselves beautiful and handsome? Why do people have such low self-esteem and confidence? In my opinion, beauty is an abstract phenomenon whose standards are defined by the society and the cosmetics industry. While others discuss whether it is a culture-specific or a universal phenomenon, I’m quite sure that it is both and none because it is something man-made. That’s why one shouldn’t get caught up in and feel the pressure of societal beauty expectations. First of all, people should not buy into the lie of beauty standards because beauty is a social construct which means that we don’t come into this world with the notion of it. We see some perfect images of celebrities, both male and female in the media every day. Subconsciously, we form an unrealistic depiction and a narrow definition of beauty and feel pressured to look just like them. This is actually a technique of the cosmetics industry which tries to raise need and sell us their products and services.
