Rainforests are warm and wet places. They exist near the Equator, in countries like SouthAmerica, Africa, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Rainforests are important because theyare home to many animals and plants. They are also good for the Earth’s climate.

A rainforest has four layers:The emergent layer is the very top layer. The tallest trees rise above the other trees. This layer gets the most sunlight. The weather is generally windy. Many different kinds of birds, butterflies, and other insects live here.

The canopy layer is just below the emergent layer. It is the main layer in the rainforest. Most animals live here. You can see birds, bees, tree frogs, monkeys, and snakes in the canopy.

The understory layer is below the canopy. It is dark, wet, and cool here. So, the trees and plants are usually small. Snakes, insects, ants, and even jaguars live in the understory.

The forest floor is the bottom layer of the rainforest. It has little sunlight because of the thick layers above. Larger animals, some reptiles, and many big spiders live on the forest floor. Some people live here, too.
