History of Surgery
— You know that surgery is not fun. No one likes staying in hospital, getting needles, or recovering from surgery.
Imagine you lived in Europe 800 years ago and needed a surgery. There weren’t enough doctors in those years, especially in small towns. There were local medicine men or shamans and they gave sick people some medicine made from herbs.
Everything was different 500 years ago. Surgeons operated in front of an audience in an operating theatre and medical students watched the surgery. Moreover, there were serious problems during the operation and ‘-ı those problems killed many patients. The biggest problem was infection. Surgeons operated without washing their hands or tools. Bandages were made from old scraps from cotton factories. They didn’t know about infection. On top of that, patients were awake for surgery because they didn’t know anything about anaesthetic. Doctors gave some herbs to patients to help with pain, but it was still very painful.
In the 1800s, they invented anaesthetic and discovered infection. Surgery became much safer and fewer people died on the operating table. Now, you should be glad you’re living today and you didn’t live several hundred years ago.
