SIGNS IN THE CAVES
Last summer, we made an excursion to see the cave paintings of Spain, especially the most famous one of them, the Cave of Altamira. It was the most thrilling experience I’ve ever had. The ceilings of the cave chambers were covered with paintings and engravings. They were mostly vivid images of bisons painted in red and black, figures of big horses, rhinos and deer. There were also lots of signs and symbols. I really adored them and decided to make my history project on cave paintings to learn more.Prehistorians have concentrated on the paintings and worked on them a great deal, the signs which meant nothing much to most scientists have attracted anthropologists recently. They have started with creating a database of the signs spotted in the caves of Spain and France to find out more about them. Their work has shown that these markings are not abstract patterns but a kind of code. The scientists haven’t named them as a language yet, as they want to be sure first. However, this is exciting news and brings new questions about the history of humankind.
