THE KIWI
The kiwi is a national symbol of New Zealand and lives only in New Zealand. New Zealanders really like to cali themselves ‘KIWI’ and there is a picture of a kiwi in New Zealand.
The kiwi gets its name from Maori people’s imitation of its cry. The Maori traditionally believe that the kiwi is under the protection of Tane Mahuta, god of the forest, so they consider that they are the guardians of the kiwi.
The kiwi is a very strange bird because it cannot fly. Even though they are the same size as chickens, they lay eggs like the size of ostrich eggs. Besides, their enormous eggs are the largest in the world of birds. Although it is a bird, it does not have wings or a tail and its feathers look like hair. Each foot has four toes and its beak is extremely long so these features make the bird unique in the world.
The kiwi likes to have a lot of trees around it because during the day time, they sleep and take a rest since the sunlight hurts its eyes so it is almost blind during the day. Although it can see about six feet at night it see only two feet during the day. Even though it is remarkably blind, it has a highly developed sense of smell which makes it better than most of the birds.
There are only a few kiwis in New Zealand. Now. They are very shy birds. People do not often see them. The government says that people cannot kili kiwis. New Zealanders want their highly important kiwis to live.
