THE GREATEST MAN
Alex: I am presenting Galileo’s life for my ferm work in the class tomorrow but I do not know if I am ready for it. If you do not mind, will you listen to my presentation? I will be pleased if you comment about it.
Peter: Yes, sure.
Alex: OK, I am ready. The great astronomer Galileo was born in Italy in 1564. His first education was in a monastery and he was an excellent student. He studied medicine first but he was also interested in physics and mathematics then finally decided to leave the university and make scientific observations. His interest led a great revolution in the scientific world because he built his own telescope to look at the sky and discover the truth about the universe and the moon. Besides, Galileo studied the planets and the Sun and he noticed that the planet Satürn was not round and it had rings. He also found that the Earth and the other planets orbited the Sun. İn addition, Galileo discovered that everything falls at the same speed. According to the traditional beliefs, if you drop two items of different weights which have the same size and shape, the heavier one lands first. For example, if you jump off a bridge at the same time with an elephant, an elephant hit the water first. On the contrary to the traditional belief, Galileo did an experiment at the Leaning Tower of Pisa to prove his theory. Instead of throwing an elephant from a bridge, he dropped two round balls – one was very heavy and the other one was light – from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. They both hit the ground at the same time. The result of his experiment made the scientists of that time furious, because of he questioning the traditional views. İn spite of his scientific success and experiments, Catholic Church unfortunately considered his ideas as heresy. They punished him to live at his home under arrest. Without any hesitation, he continued his writing but in his lateryears, he became blind and died in 1642. The scientific world has undoubtedly opened a new dimension since Galileo invented the telescope and his ideas have existed as long as the earth rotates.
