Atatürk was a statesman who best realized and emphasized the value of public education and training. He regarded education as the real force that would transform the life of a nation. The Education System Congress, in July 1921, was a real proof of his attitude towards education. Just before the War of Sakarya, Atatürk turned back to Ankara from the front to start the congress and he made the opening speech. During the hottest time of the 3rd Greek attack, Mustafa Kemal Pasha was engaged in the army of education.

He knew that the language reform would enable people to read and write easier and in shorter time, and to study Western languages with greater effectiveness.
Lots of public schools were opened all over the country on 24th November, 1928. Then a great campaign was started in the country to teach how to read and write. Literacy which had been less than 9% in 1923 rose to more than 33% by 1938. Since it was the day that public schools were opened and Atatürk was chosen as the Headteacher, 24th November has been celebrated as the teachers’ day since 1981.
