UNICEF
UNICEF shares a commitment to protect children’s rights and meet their basic needs. To achieve this, UNICEF usually enlists the support of celebrities. Their fame can easily attract attention to focus the world’s eyes on the needs of children. They can use their talents and fame to fundraise for expanding children’s opportunities all over the world.
Danny Kaye was a talented entertainer and the first goodwill ambassador of UNICEF in 1954. He represented UNICEF in many projects until his death in 1987. Kaye was flying to New York when his association with UNICEF started in 1953. UNICEF Executive Director, Maurice Pate was sitting next to Kaye on the journey.
Pate told him about a new project. The result was a documentary,
“Assignment: Children”. İt was a record of Kaye’s tour including many countries like India, Japan, Korea and Myanmar. İt has reached more than 100 million people.
While Kaye was circling the globe over the next 33 years, he made speeches, gave performances and informed the public about children’s needs. He promoted the ‘Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF’ campaign by flying his own plane on whirlwind tours to enlist children as volunteers. Kaye managed to visit more than 65 cities in a five-day trip in 1968 and this trip put him in the Guinness Book of Records as the World’s Fastest- Flying Entertainer. Kaye’s optimism about the future of the world’s children, and his role in UNICEF made him unforgettable.
