Read the text and find out who the real İzmir lover is.
A REAL İZMİR LOVER
İzmir is a city of deep blue… A city of indescribable beauty… A city of freedom…
Once you watch the city from the wooden balcony of The Historical Elevator, you will be stunned by the view.
As a real must-see place, the Elevator Tower was built by a businessman called Nesim Levi in 1907. There were about 58 meters between the lower and the upper streets so he wanted to create an easier way between the coastline and the hillside. The elevator really eased to carry people and goods through the steep cliff between the streets and after many restorations, it has become one of the landmarks of İzmir.
The Historical Elevator is in Dario Moreno Street. There are a lot of old Greek Houses on this lovely street named after a Jewish-Turkish musician, an actor and a real İzmir lover; Dario Moreno. After he became a well-known singer, he moved to a house in this street. He lived there with his mother until 1968 when he died of a heart attack at the age of 47.
He loved everything about İzmir. He had told his love for İzmir by the following lines;
“İzmir! My sweet and dear city! If I die far away from you one day, may they bring me to you, but while taking me to my grave, may they not say of me ‘he died’, may they say ‘he is sleeping..’ ”
Although these lines are also his last will, his grave is in Israel as his mother wanted so. Today, in his memory, these lines are written next to his bust in the entrance of the street leading to the Historical Elevator.
If you come to İzmir, do visit Dario Moreno Street and hop on the elevator. When you are up, a nice restaurant, a great view of the city and a piece of old İzmir music will welcome you. You will fall in love with the city.
Loving a city is like loving your mother. They are both your home where you feel safe and comfort no matter how far you are. Your love for both will retain throughout your life and maybe after life like Moreno’s.
