PRECIOUS
Today is May 19th. The day on which our great ieader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk started the War of Independence. The whole nation, including not only soldiers but also women and children, fought for their honour and for their country both on and behind the front.
What did theysacrifice for? What was the reason? Of course it was forthe love oftheir country, for the love of their motherland. It was for patriotism. The person who loves and serves
his/her own country and who is ready to sacrifice his/ her all life for motherland is called a patriot. The land, on which we were born and brought up, is naturally more precious for us than any other land in the world. And this love for our country grows into patriotism.
Motherland… Why do we use this word while talking aboutourcountry? İt is because ourcountryis as precious as our mothers. İt is like a mother’s love for her children. They understand and love their children unconditionally. They love their children no matter what they do. They devote their lives to their children. They always want to be sure that their children are safe and happy during their lives. Mother-love awakens the same thoughts, ideals, feelings in ourhearts forthe
love of our motherland.
During the Independence War, Turkish nation devoted themselves to their country. The love for their country was so great that they fought to the death against the enemies to save their motherland. They carried on their struggle for freedom for many years.
Every year all over the country, we celebrate this day with great enthusiasm to commemorate those precious patriots who devoted themselves to their country. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk dedicated May 19th to Turkish youth because he knew that Turkish youth will preserve this valuable gift forever.
