Immortals is a 2011 3D film,110 minutes, directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Henry Cavill, Freida Pinto, and Mickey Rourke. The film was previously named Dawn of War and War of the Gods before being officially named Immortals, and is very loosely based on the Greek myths of Thesus, King Hyperion and the Titanomachy .The story is told with exquisite costumes, a magical set, and characters with familiar stories told in a new light.
In the beginning, we learn, there had been a war in the heavens. The winners had declared themselves Gods and had imprisoned the losers in a cage deep within Mount Tartarus.
Centuries before mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) declared war against humanity to recover the Bow of Epirus and free the Titans, the world had been young and the Gods had done battle in the sky. The victors had ruled on Mt. Olympus and had imprisoned the vanquished – the Titans – beneath Mt. Tartarus on Earth. Also the Bow of Epirus had been lost during the battle, a mighty weapon that could shoot invincible energy arrows.
Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power had forged in the heavens by Ares. Only he who possessed this bow could unleash the Titans, who had been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirsted for revenge. In the king’s hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the Gods.
But ancient law had dictated the Gods weren’t allowed to intervene in man’s conflict. They had remained powerless to stop Hyperion until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) who had been considered an outcast came forth as their only hope. When Hyperion’s forces destroyed Theseus’s village,Hyperion killed Theseus’s mother in front of him and imprisoned Theseus, where Phaedra (Freida Pinto) and her attendants had also been kept. That night, she and her attendants seduced and killed the guards; Phaedra escaped with Theseus and two other slaves, Stavros (Steven Dorff) and Daerios (Alan Van Spring). Phaedra told Theseus he had to return to his village and properly bury his mother. There, Theseus discovered the Bow of Epirus. Theseus was tutored by an Old Man [John Hurt] in the arts of the warrior. Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus had to save his people from Hyperion and his hordes. Theseus confronted Hyperion and, though mortally wounded, finally killed Hyperion. Rallying a band of fellow outsiders-including visionary priestess Phaedra and cunning slave Stavros (Stephen Dorff)-one hero, Theseus, would lead the uprising, or watch his homeland fall into ruin and his Gods vanish into legend. The Titans killed all of the Gods except Zeus. Zeus took Athena and Theseus to Olympus with him. Theseus was transported to Olympus for his sacrifice and given a place among the Gods.
Several years later Theseus’ story became legend and Phaedra gave birth to Acamas (Gade Munroe), Theseus’ son. Acamas was met by the Old Man who informed the child that in the future he would fight against evil one day. Acamas saw a Vision of the sky filled with Gods and Titans fighting.
