A Heroine is Born or Made?
Joan of Arc, a young French peasant girl, lived from 1412-1431. In the long wars between the French and English. She was born in the little village of Domremy, France. Her father had often told her the sad condition of France, how the country was largely in the possession of England, and how the French king did not dare to be crowned. And so the thought came to her mind, “How I pity my country!” She brooded over the matter so much that, around at age 13,she began to have visions of angels and heard the voice of God commanding her to aid the Dauphin, Charles, in his fight againstEngland and Burgundy, and to see him crowned as the King of France. Atlast these strange visions and voices made the young girl believe that she had a mission from God, and she determined to try to save France. When Joan went to Vaucouleurs to offer her aid, she was initially laughed at all, including her parents, tried to stop her.
In 1429, however, she was conferred an audience little by little. They stopped trying to discourage her and some who were wealthy helped her to make the journey to the town where the French king was living. Joan stumbled upon a battle between English and French forces. Rallying the French troops, she drove the English out fort after fort. She decisively ended the siege and earnedpopularity throughout France as the miraculous “Maid of Orleans.” Their success was amazing. Her fame spread everywhere, and the English as well as the French thought she had more than human power.
For her exploits and leadership Joan of Arc and her family were granted noble status. She has also won the hearts of the French soldiers who looked up to Joan as an almost mythical leader. She led the French in several other battles, and again and again her troops were victorious. However a year later Joan was captured by the enemy forces and sold to the English. They decided to put her on trial for witchcraft. In many ways it was a show trial which long and tiresome. As expected, at its close she was doomed to be burned at the stake. She died as a martyr.
