Singapore has many disadvantages for traffic disaster. The island city-state has a large population and a limited land area. Compared with other growing Asian metropolises, its traffic moves smoothly. Because they have solved the traffic problem by having urban transport planned. Besides they have an effective mass-transit system. The main thing that keeps gridlock at bay is the government’s decree that the car population can grow no faster than the road network -some 2% to 3% a year.
This way seems to be an effective solution to avoid road snarls. However; it has caused to the highest car prices in the world. Owners must pay a one-time registration fee of $600,plus an additional charge equal to 150% of the car’s market value. İn 1990 when they couldn’t supply the demands, the government had the Certificate of Entitlement sold which was a permit available only in limited numbers. The result is that buying a car can be costlier in some months than in others. İn January a car can be bought with a price of $ 10,061 when basic costs of the car; import duties and registration fees are included that car can cost around 40,780 in July.
Certainly, ali these precautions taken by the government worked and number of the cars on motorways decreased.
Singaporeans are sympathetic to the government’s goal of keeping traffic moving, because they have got the excellent public transportation system built. And also there is a very good taxi and bus system
