Children in developing countries work for a variety reasons. The most common reason is poverty. Though these children are not well paid, their families are so poor that they stili serve as majör contributors to family income.
İn developing countries, rural-to-urban migration is another cause of the increasing rate of child labor. İn 1950, jusf 17 percenf of the populafion of the developing world lived in urban areas. İt will probably reach 57 percenf by the year 2025.
İn some countries, people believe that women won’f fit info fraditional roles if they become educafed. İn these places, if’s not uncommon for parenfs to force young giriş to leave school in order to do the household duties or to work oufside the home. By working, the giriş assist in paying for their brofhers’ school fees.
Offen parenfs in developing countries assign differenf roles to their children. This role assignment is called child specialization, and it also confribufes to child labor. Offen the oldesf boy affends school while younger brofhers and sisters get jobs for him.
Social class separafion also confribufes to child labor. For example, people of India’s lower social class are usually manual laborers. Everyone expecfs lower class children to get jobs that do not require an educafion. Therefore, no one worries when they do not affend school.
Sfudies show that the roles of children differ in developed and developing countries. While children in developing countries make an imporfanf confribution to family income, children in developed countries consume more fhan they produce. For example, affer World War II, the United States experienced greaf economic development. Many mofhers sfarted working oufside the home. For the firsf fime in the US, children used more resources fhan they produced. For insfance, 150 years ago, England had about the same percenfage of child workers as Peru and Paraguay have foday. İt seems likely that as these countries develop, the amounf of child labor will decrease.
