Near the square, there is a monument. It tells the story of the city's past. The harbour is next to a river. Ferries arrive and depart. A fire station is close to the houses to help in emergencies. A shopping centre is nearby, making shopping easy for residents. ► Work in pairs. One student is the navigator, and the other is the explorer trying to reach a destination in the city. ► Use the map provided on page 171. It shows a small part of a town with buildings and streets. ► Write the given street names and places wherever you think is possible. ► The teacher gives the Navigator a secret destination on the map (e.g., the Pharmacy). ► The Navigator studies the map and records or gives oral directions to help the Explorer reach the destination. You can say: "Start from the roundabout. Go along Oak Street and turn right onto Station Street. The building is next to the Library." ► The Explorer listens carefully and uses the blank map to follow the directions. The Explorer points to the destination s/he believes is correct. ► If it's correct, the Navigator confirms and they switch roles. ► If it's wrong, the Navigator can give a clue and let them try again.
