2B Read the text aloud and fluently. Pay attention to intonation, stress and punctuation.
There are a lot of superstitions about weddings in England. For example, the bride and the groom can’t see each other on the morning of the wedding day. Also, rainy weather brings good luck to the bride and the groom. There are also some superstitions about the clothes of the bride. A bride always wears something old, because it signifies friendship. She also wears a new item for health, happiness and success. There is always something blue on her clothes, because blue represents constancy and good luck. The bride also carries some blossom, because blossom means purity and loveliness. There are some superstitions about the wedding cake, too. The bride and the groom have the first cut from the cake together, because it symbolizes sharing life. In the wedding ceremony, guests throw confetti over the bride and the groom, because confetti symbolizes life-giving seeds. At the end of the wedding, the bride throws the flowers in her hand away and a girl catches them, so this girl has a chance to get married soon.
Read the text again silently. Take notes about the wedding superstitions and their meanings as in the example.
